Story

This song is from a new CD I am working on. It is about a canoe trip I took with my son down the Wanganui River in New Zealand. As the mystics say, a river is a metaphor for life and this song explores that mystery and delight.

One Life

This album is a collection of 12 songs written over a period of about four years. Some of the songs began as poems, and eventually I found a melody for them. Other of the songs began as a melody, and the words came from there.

    One Life

One life, don’t let it go lightly
One life, don’t let it slip you by
Put on your wings. Reach up to the sky. You can fly!

One love, don’t let it go lightly
One love, don’t let it slip you by
Open your heart. Look into her eyes. My oh my!

One heart, don’t let it go lightly
One heart, don’t let it slip you by
If you feel pain. Ask it out to play. It won’t stay.

One mind, don’t let it go lightly
One mind, don’t let it slip you by
Here is the key. Luminosity.  You are free!

One breath, don’t let it go lightly
One breath, don’t let it slip you by
Exhale to sleep. Inhale to arise You’re alive!

One wish, don’t let it go lightly
One wish, don’t let it slip you by
Get on your knees. Look up to the sky. You can fly!

    One life, one life
    One life, one life

    Only Thing

Don’t need no words of praise, I won’t believe them anyway
Don’t need an eagle’s eye, to see behind the veil of lies
Don’t need a beauty queen, to tell me that it’s just a dream

I’m just a simple man doing what I can
The only thing I need is what you have in hand
I’m just a simple man or so it seems to be
The only thing I need is what you bring to me

Don’t need to travel far, it’s fine just being where you are
Don’t need the shining lights, just you beneath the moon at night
Don’t need no forest path, to know which way is going to last

I’m just a simple man doing what I can
The only thing I need is what you have in hand
I’m just a simple man or so it seems to be
The only thing I need is what you bring to me

Don’t need the finest wine, it won’t slow the march of time
Don’t need filet mignon, it won’t help in the great beyond
Don’t need a room of gold, it won’t keep me from getting old

I’m just a simple man doing what I can
The only thing I need is what you have in hand
I’m just a simple man or so it seems to be
The only thing I need is what you bring to me
I’m just a simple man or so I have been told
The only thing I need is what your heart can hold

    Socks

Her name was Maria, I met her in a Laundromat
I like to think it was because of my lucky hat
She was folding some socks, and I was folding mine
I went up and asked her if she happened to know the time, and she said

It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we make the most of it
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we get toasted

We went outside for a walk but it started to rain
We got drenched to the bone and headed back to change
We took off our shirts and our pants and put them in to dry
I asked her what temperature and she said, make it high

It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we make the most of it
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we get toasted

We stood there in our underwear and watched the clothes go around
Thank god it was winter break and no one was in town
She told me she liked fine things and laughed at all my jokes
I told her I just bought some weed and now I was broke

It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we make the most of it
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we get toasted

We went back to her place, she poured me some wine
I rolled a big fat doobie and told her she looked fine
We talked until two and then she said it’s time for bed
I thought that sounded like a song, so that’s what I said

It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we make the most of it
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we get toasted

Her name was Maria, I called her the next day
I asked if she wasn’t busy could she come out and play
That was just the first of many days I had with her
To think it started with socks on the longest night of the year

It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we make the most of it
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we get toasted
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we make the most of it
It’s the winter solstice, so why don’t we get toasted

    Kiss Me

Take my hand and walk with me, tell me all the things you see
There’s a window in my heart, you are standing in the dark

    Kiss me
Kiss my hands and kiss my feet
Tell me all the things you see

Take my hands and walk with me, won’t you keep me company
Climb the mountain in the sky, find the canyons deep inside

    Kiss me
Kiss my hands and kiss my feet
Pray my precious soul to keep

Take my hands and walk with me, tell me all the things you see
Birds are singing in the night, their voice rising into flight

    Kiss me
Kiss my hands and kiss my feet
Lay me down in the ground to sleep

    Kiss my hands
    Kiss my feet
Kiss my hands and kiss my feet
Tell me all the things you see
Kiss my hands and kiss my feet
Pray my precious soul to keep
Kiss my hands and kiss my feet
Lay me down in the ground to sleep

    Love Don't End

My woman up and left me last night
She said I’d get along all right
This morning I woke and reached for her
Felt the sheets cold as winter

Love don’t end she explained, sometimes the feelings just change
My heart it is an empty room, soon I’ll be howlin’ at the moon

Got me a six pack of some beer
Don’t think I’m ever leavin’ here
Got me some tequila and some gin
Seems like I’m down this road again

Love don’t end she explained, sometimes the feelings just change
My heart it is an empty room, soon I’ll be howlin’ at the moon

It’s been six months now maybe more
Find myself listening at the door
To hear her laugh to hear her cry
Seems like all I hear is sky

Love don’t end she explained, sometimes the feelings just change
My heart it is an empty room, soon I’ll be howlin’ at the moon

I hear she’s got another man
I hear he’s gonna ask her hand
Guess it’s time to let her go
Time for this old heart to grow

Love don’t end she explained, sometimes the feelings just change
My heart it is an empty room, no more howlin’ at the moon

    She Be the One

I met her on Monday while walking the lake, she turned every head with her shimmies and shakes
Her outfit matched in vermillion and mauve, it fit to her body like a skin tight glove
I smiled and winked as she passed where I stood, thank God for silicone, it sure looks good
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

I met her on Tuesday in my yoga class, her downward dog really showed off her ass
She had rings on her fingers and rings on her toes, she looked like a flexible Marilyn Monroe
We sat in the end in a meditation pose, the light from behind shone like a halo
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

It should have been obvious it should have been clear, she’d be the one who would be most dear
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

I met her on Wednesday while visiting my mom, she worked on the 5th floor with young Dr. Tom
She had two tattoos, one on each breast, the one of the blue rose I liked the best
She was cute and curly and blond as a bombshell, you could tell from her eyes she had stories to tell
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

I met her on Thursday in a meeting at work, she was stroking a pen like it was ready to jerk
She had long black hair and olive skin, and eyes like pools you wanted to swim in
I asked her to meet me for coffee or tea, she smiled sweetly and said we’ll see
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

It should have been obvious it should have been clear, she was the one who would be most dear
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

I met her on Friday while having a drink, I took a look at her and I couldn’t think
Her lips were like peaches they had to be fake, her hair was like fire for heaven’s sake
I smiled and said this round is on me, then let my hand slip to her knee
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

I met her on Saturday on a forest path, she had eyes that sparkled and seemed to laugh
She was on her way to soak in a pool, I asked her her sign like some damn fool
The water steamed and she let out sign, she had nut brown skin from her head to her thighs
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

It should have been obvious it should have been clear, she was the one who would be most dear
It should have been obvious right from the start, she’d be the one who would break my heart

    Llama's Eyes

There were six of us, hiking on the Inca trail
The ancient stones spoke to us, seekers of the Holy Grail
Every night the rain came down and washed away our sin
We woke refreshed like children, ready to do it all over again

Then there were sixty, wandering through the country side
Like shepherds with our flock, we took beauty for our guide
The Southern Cross, the Milky Way, the llama’s eyes to which we prayed
    alive, we were so alive

Then there were six hundred, climbing in the mountain air
The sun, the moon, the sky above, we were in the condor’s lair
Every night the snow came down and covered where we’d been
We woke refreshed like children, ready to do it all over again

Then there were six thousand, holding to the Inca cross
The sacred valley guarded us, so we could not be lost
Ausangate, Urubamba, Machu Pichu, here we come
    alive, alive

Now there are more of us than all the stars in the sky
The bones of us begin to rise, soon you will hear our cries
Every night the wind comes up and whispers of our kin
We wake refreshed like children, ready to do it all over again
The Southern Cross, the Milky Way, the llama’s eyes to which we pray
    alive, alive
Ausangate, Urubamba, Machu Pichu, here we come
    alive

    After the Full Moon

I’m through believing in you. I’m through believing in you.
It’s over. We’re through. After the full moon comes the new.

Her other lover lives beneath the basement stairs.
His solitary room is draped in skins and feathers and bones.
He calls her down after the house is wrapped in sleep.
She knows the way even in the dark.

He kisses the corners of her mouth as she shivers and shakes.
He traces the tender curve of her throat down to her belly and thigh.
She cries out in pleasure and in pain as he wounds her.
The healer she sees by day cannot cure her.

I’m through believing in you. I’m through believing in you.
It’s over. We’re through. After the full moon comes the new.

We live in well-lit rooms with blue china plates on the wall.
One night I will follow her down. I will throw the skins back.
I will call him out. I will tell her she must choose.
I will have the pleasure of her answer.

I’m through believing in you. I’m through believing in you.
It’s over. We’re through. After the full moon comes the new.
After the full moon comes the new.

    Dare to See

I am not alone in this world where I roam
I am among hearts like my own
I will not need fear in the dark where I go
I will find a light this I know

My arms will hold onto what is true
My eyes will dare to see what can be

You are not alone in this world where you roam
You are among hearts like your own
You will not need fear in the dark where you go
You will find a light this I know

Your arms will hold onto what is true
Your eyes will dare to see what can be

We are not alone in this world where we roam
We are among hearts like our own
We will not need fear in the dark where we go

    Some Lovin'

One thing is certain,  one thing is clear
One thing is certain,  I’ll tell you my dear
With everything, you’re gonna shed a tear
When you got nothing, there’s nothing left to fear

You want some lovin’, that’s plain to see
You want some lovin’, well obviously
But a coconut, doesn’t fall far from the tree
You take some seeds, you plant them, and you see

My momma told me, this is what she’d say
My momma told me, it’s gonna be this way
You find some lovin’, you’re gonna want to stay
And if you’re lucky, it’s gonna make your day

One thing is certain,  one thing I know
One thing is certain,  I know I told you so
What you do to me, it’s gonna have to show
You take some straw and you turn it into gold

You want some lovin’, that’s plain to see
You want some lovin’, well obviously
But a coconut, doesn’t fall far from the tree
You take some seeds, you plant them, and you see

One thing is certain,  one thing I know
One thing is certain,  I know I told you so
What you do to me, it’s gonna have to show
You take some straw and you turn it into gold
You take some straw and you turn it into gold
You take some straw and you turn it into gold

    Take the Leap

We are naked, you and I, two naked teenagers sitting on granite blocks
above the slate gray water of the old abandoned quarry.
The sun is at its peak, the warmth of the rocks seeps into the soles of our feet
As we sit and talk and scratch and look up into the blue, blue, blue Connecticut sky.
You take my hand in yours and hold it to your breast
so I can feel your heart beating fast as a birds.
Then we stand together and leap. The air moves against our skin. It can’t hold us.

Take my hand and walk with me. Take my heart and fly, fly away, like a bird.
You can see me everywhere, lookin’ for the right place to turn.
Take my eyes and look around. Take my voice and please, please be free, like a song.
You can hear me everywhere, wonderin’ about where I belong.

And like that forty years pass. I no longer skinny dip in quarry pools
or leap into things that cannot hold me.
I have not seen another Connecticut summer or felt a need so deep in my belly.
Then I see you standing there calm and wise as a Chinese sage and the years wash away.
I offer my hand and say my name but nothing matters but the pull of your eyes.
They speak a language I can understand. Come on in they say, the water’s fine.

Did I say,  you look lovely tonight?
I meant to, I meant to

Did I show you the moon in my window?
I meant to, I meant to
Did I show you the moon in my window?
I meant to, I meant to

Did I tell you, my heart is on fire?
I meant to, I meant to
Did I tell you, my tears fall like rain?
I meant to, I meant to
Did I tell you, my arms hold the sky?

I meant to, I meant to

    Come Say Goodbye

Daylights dawning, there’s a trace of snow
My bags are all packed, as you already know
Come and hold me once more before I go
Come and hold me once more before I go

I’ll be home again, when God is willing
Come say goodbye, baby don’t you cry

I’ve been thinking about the things I leave behind
How I take for granted, what is there all the time
Guess I’m leaving, to see what I can find
Guess I’m leaving, to see what I can find

I’ll be home again, when God is willing
Come say goodbye, baby don’t you cry

Come to the orchard in spring. There is light
and wine and lovers in the pomegranate flowers
If you do not come, these do not matter.
If you do come, these do not matter.

Daylights dawning, there’s a trace of snow
My bags are all packed, as you already know
Come and hold me once more before I go
Come and hold me once more before I go

I’ll be home again, when God is willing
Come say goodbye, baby don’t you cry

    Down the Road

Got no wallet and got no keys, got no responsibility
What I own is on my back, what I know don’t mean jack
I’m headed down the road for a while, you can tell by my big fat smile
If you come along, you can smile too.

Headed into Mexico, have a couple of tostados
Then it’s on into Belize, where I can do what I damn well please
I’m headed down the road for a while, you can tell by my big fat smile
If you come along, you can smile too.

Look for me in Guatemala, where I will do the cha cha cha
Then it’s on to El Salvador, you’ll have to peel me from the floor
I’m headed down the road for a while, you can tell by my big fat smile
If you come along, you can smile too.

In Nicaragua you will see, what I can do when I am free
The only thing that will hold me back is what I got in my bank account
I’m headed down the road for a while, you can tell by my big fat smile
If you come along, you can smile too.

Got no wallet and got no keys, got no responsibility
What I own is on my back, what I know don’t mean jack
I’m headed down the road for a while, you can tell by my big fat smile
If you come along, you can smile too.

    Once More

Once more I go down this road
Alone again my heart and soul

I was certain as certain could be
That our love would go on
That was just the first of many things
    I had wrong

Once more I go down this road
Alone again my heart and soul
Alone again my heart and soul

You told me that you wanted to make
The whole world be your home
You told me that you wanted to
    Do it alone

Once more I go down this road
Alone again my heart and soul

There is a tiger that paces and roams
    All alone by my door
Some day I hope to tell you what
    He’s waiting for

Once more I go down this road
Alone again my heart and soul
Once more I go down this road
Alone again my heart and soul

    Argentina

    Headin’ down to Argentina
Fell in love with a senorita
Met her in my tango classes
Said I needed lots of practice

Asked her to be my private tutor
If she thought that would suit her
She's the one that I've been looking for
I want to be her goodwill ambassador.

I went out to her casita
    Lookin’ like a real tourista
    1500 Calle De Oro
Down a street that’s straight and narrow

Met the parents, met the nieces
Gave them gifts of Reese's pieces
She's the one that I've been looking for
I want to be her goodwill ambassador.

She's the one that I've been looking for
I want to be her goodwill ambassador.

Took her home in a private taxi
    She was lookin’  mighty sexy
She lived with her Uncle Jesus
    God almighty he was useless

Spent the day in his silk pajamas
    Eating toast and green bananas
She's the one that I've been looking for
I want to be her goodwill ambassador.

    Waited for the right occasion
When I might pop the question
Said she had to think it over
    Wasn’t what I was expectin’

Told her that I’d see her later
Then went out for some cerveza
She's the one that I've been looking for
I want to be her goodwill ambassador.

She's the one that I've been looking for
I want to be her goodwill ambassador.

    Headin’ home from Argentina
    All alone, no senorita

    En Este Viaje

En este viaje, no puedo creer
Que cada dia, es mejor que ayer
Que cada dia, es mejor que ayer

A mis amigos, que he hecho
Yo doy la gracias, y los quiero
Yo doy la gracias, y los quiero

Yo sé siempre, vamos a compartir
El sentimiento que al dentro vivir
El sentimiento que al dentro vivir

On this journey I can’t believe
Each day is better than the day before
To my friends that I have made
I give my thanks and my love
I know we will always share
    The feelings that live inside

En este viaje, no puedo creer
Que cada dia, es mejor que ayer
Que cada dia, es mejor que ayer

    Romero

His name was Romero, he was a simple priest
Marrying the children of the rich, saying blessings for their feasts
He saw the rich had everything, no dream was too small
He saw the poor had to fight each day, for anything at all

    Dios mio, escuche me
Da me fuerza, y di me porque

He said to them just look around, this doesn’t have to be
Give each man a piece of land, it will set us all free
This wasn’t what they wanted to hear, from their simple priest
Who was he to say to them, be gracious to the least

    Dios mio, escuche me
Da me fuerza, y di me porque

One day as he stood in church, amidst the bread and wine
Two bullets pierced his heart, to keep him in line
The blood of Romero spread out across the floor
A cry went up across the land, a wind blew at the door

    Dios mio, escuche me
Da me fuerza, y di me porque

The war lasted many years, finally the madness stopped
Each man with a piece of land, went back to planting crops
I suppose you are wondering, was it worth all the pain
We still have the rich and poor, looks pretty much the same
But something is different now, down in El Salvador
There is a new hero, they call him Romero

    Dios mio, escuche me
Da me fuerza, y di me porque
God of mine, here my cry
Give me strength, and tell me why

    Fell in Love

I was walking down the street one day
Minding my business, going my way
When I caught from the corner of my eye
A hint of your smile like a light in the sky
A hint of your smile like a light in the sky

I fell in love like a lightning bolt
And the thunder sprang from my heart
I fell in love like a lightning bolt
And the thunder sprang from my heart

I was standing in line for some food
    Out of my regular neighborhood
When I caught from the corner of my eye
A hint of your smile like a light in the sky
A hint of your smile like a light in the sky

I fell in love like a lightning bolt
And the thunder sprang from my heart
I fell in love like a lightning bolt
And the thunder sprang from my heart

I was looking through an old magazine
Thinking about places still left to see
When I caught from the corner of my eye
A hint of your smile like a light in the sky
A hint of your smile like a light in the sky

I fell in love like a lightning bolt
And the thunder sprang from my heart

    Cold Feet

I tend to write about the things that I know
    Maybe you can relate
I’ve been married and single in equal measure in my life
I guess you could call it fate

I am nearly 60 years old
My feet are kind of cold
My eyes are as blue as the sky
My hair is as white as the snow

I’m out there again on the singles scene
    I can tell you it’s a fright
The kind of women who seem to want my company
Charge by the hour or extra for the night

I am nearly 60 years old
My feet are kind of cold
My eyes are as blue as the sky
My hair is as white as the snow

Sometime I’ll go and hang out in a bar
Just troll my line for a strike
I’ve learned there are some things you don’t want to say
To a woman you think you might like

Like, I’ve seen every episode of Star Trek
    That has ever been made
Or you remind me of my ex-wife
Or, I’m just here looking to get laid

I am nearly 60 years old
My feet are kind of cold
My eyes are as blue as the sky
My hair is as white as the snow

Now I don’t have to be a rocket scientist
To see the writing on the wall
The women in their 30s, they look good to me
They don’t see me at all

So I’ve learned to just enjoy myself
And find pleasure where I may
If love comes along, well that’s just great
If not, I’ll have a nice day

I am nearly 60 years old
My feet are kind of cold
My eyes are as blue as the sky
My heart is as good as gold

    We Believe

You believe you’ve got to work for everything in life
I believe things come to you as long as you do right
You believe you’ve got to fight no matter what the cost
I believe we must have peace or everything is lost
    or everything is lost

We believe two different things as different as they can be
We’ve got to find a way we can live in harmony

You believe in destiny, in being your own man
I believe in community, you lend a helping hand
You believe that all you see is part of a design
I believe that what you seek is what you’re gonna find
    is what you’re gonna find

We believe two different things as different as they can be
We’ve got to find a way we can live in harmony

You believe in God above, the devil down below
I believe that God resides in everything we know
You believe this country is the best in all the land
I believe no borders should lie between our fellow man
    between our fellow man

We believe two different things as different as they can be
We’ve got to find a way we can live in harmony

You believe, I believe, We believe, We shall see
We’ve got to find a way we can live in harmony

    Reckless Heart

You will have two sons he said
He could see it in the lines in my hand
I could see the wind in his eyes
How could he know the plan

Reckless heart, keep falling in love
Reckless dreams I keep thinking of

Love will find you late in your life
    After many trials and pain
Your sun and moon is too afflicted
    You will lose your flame

Reckless heart, keep falling in love
Reckless dreams I keep thinking of

Speak to your fire he said
Tell it all your hopes and cares
Keep a candle burning by your side
    It will lead you there

Reckless heart, keep falling in love
Reckless dreams I keep thinking of

I have had two sons like he said
I have found my share of pain
Life is just a mirror to myself
    A lesson to learn again

Reckless heart, keep falling in love
Reckless dreams I keep thinking of

    Now I Am Old

I fell in love with a girl, her name was Cindy
She loved the country and I, I loved the city
Now I am old and I wonder
Now I am old and I wonder, what a pity

We had a son and we gave him the name of Billy
I used to play with him and act pretty silly
Now I am old and I wonder
Now I am old and I wonder, what was I really

I used to lie in bed listening to the wind blow
Wondering about the places still left to go
Now I am old and I wonder
Now I am old and I wonder, what did I know

We didn’t last very long in our relation
It was like we were from two different nations
Now I am old and I wonder
Now I am old and I wonder, what a temptation

I left one day down the long lonely highway
I did it once, I did it twice, my way
Now I am old and I wonder
Now I am old and I wonder, was it the right way

I fell in love with a girl, her name was Cindy
She loved the country and I, I loved the city
Now I am old and I wonder
Now I am old and I wonder, what a pity

    Waiting

Waiting for that One True Thing
    It’s gonna change Every Thing
Last coin to tilt the scale
Ahab and the Great White Whale
    Will it happen today?
    I can’t say. I can’t say. I’m waiting.

Will it come like the end of rain
Bees drumming at the window pane
    Soft voices rising, falling
I think I hear my Maker calling
    Will it happen today?
    I can’t say. I can’t say. I’m waiting.

Will it come like a hammer to the thumb
Curses all the way to Kingdom Come
Have I become the thing I fear
Will there be no one to hear
    Will it happen today
    I can’t say. I can’t say. I’m waiting.

    Will it sneak up unexpectedly
Like a child in the grocery
Soft hands reaching out with love
Down the aisle with the wine and the Vapor Rub
    Will it happen today
    I can’t say. I can’t say. I’m waiting.

Will I see it coming my way
Time to get down on my knees and pray
Lead me down the valley wide
Lead me on like a long lost guide
    Will it happen today
    I can’t say. I can’t say. I’m waiting.

Waiting for that One True Thing

    It’s gonna change Every Thing

Last coin to tilt the scale

Ahab and the Great White Whale

    Will it happen today

    I can’t say. I can’t say. I’m waiting.

Story

This song is from my first album that was a collaboration with another singer/songwriter named Michael Shohan. It was written during a period of time when it seemed like everywhere I went, eagles would appear.

Story

This song is from my first CD. It tells the story of a vision quest I went on in Eastern Washington. I sat on a hill top for two days fasting. One afternoon, as the sun beat down on my hoop drum an ant fell into the drum head and I could hear its tiny feet going back and forth across the deer skin.

These woods are lovely,
dark and deep.
But I have miles to go
